Letter of Support: Addressing the Waitlist Management Crisis in General Internal Medicine

February 11, 2025

Dear Consultant Specialist Colleagues in British Columbia,

I am writing on behalf of The Society of General Internal Medicine of BC to express our full support for the Consultant Specialists of BC (cSBC) and their ongoing advocacy on behalf of both Specialists and the patients we serve. In light of the current waitlist crisis affecting Specialist Care across British Columbia, we believe that a collaborative approach is essential to addressing these systemic challenges. We stand ready to contribute our expertise and insights to ensure that all patients receive the timely, high-quality care they deserve.

Our executive recently met to discuss the Specialist Waitlist Crisis in BC. While this issue is longstanding, there is a growing sense of urgency. As a “general” specialty, we have a unique position within the healthcare system, providing longitudinal, comprehensive care to patients with complex and chronic medical conditions. We are often the only medical provider some of our patients see leading to the need for more frequent appointments. These increased demands on our time limit our ability to accommodate new and acute patients. This, in turn, leads to extended waitlists and greater challenges in delivering timely care.

The strain on Specialist Care is further exacerbated by the growing number of referrals and the necessity of managing complex cases over extended periods (sometimes indefinitely for those without a primary care provider). Balancing the demands of ongoing patient care while ensuring timely access for new patients is becoming increasingly difficult. Without systemic changes, these pressures will continue to contribute to burnout and delayed access to necessary medical interventions.

The Society of Internal Medicine of BC stands firmly in support of the Consultant Specialists of BC. We are committed to working collaboratively toward innovative solutions that address the growing waitlist crisis and ensure that all patients receive the appropriate level of care. We appreciate your efforts and look forward to joining forces in these critical discussions.

Sincerely,

Paul Hertz, MD FRCPC - Internal Medicine

Division Head, Internal Medicine - Lions Gate Hospital President, Society of General Internal Medicine of BC
