Dear members and prospective members:

The Implicit Re-Referral and Subsequent Consultation go into effect July 1, 2023. In many cases, patients will be able to see their consultant Specialist for an ongoing problem without having to see their referring physician, relieving the burden on Specialists, Family Doctors and patients. Consultant Specialists of BC, BC Family Doctors (BCFD), Doctors of BC, Tariff and the Ministry collaborated on this important initiative through the Consultation and Referral Working Group (CRWG).

At cSBC, we have heard a lot of great questions from Specialists about the specifics and nuances of the changes with the Implicit Re-Referral and Subsequent Consultation. Doctors of BC is offering webinars later this month on these changes. The webinars are open to all physicians, plus your MOAs, practice managers and other staff. You can register here These webinars are a great place to voice any concerns and get your questions answered about this new consultation change.

These consultations, referrals and re-referral changes can also be found here and will be incorporated into the General Preamble of the Medical Services Commission Payment Schedule.

Right now only a fraction of Specialists pay for the work we do as a voluntary organization. You
can help address that imbalance by joining (see link below). Please reach out to our Executive Director Andrea Elvidge at [email protected] if you’re unsure of your membership status.
